Intermediate & High Grade Belt Testing – A True Measure of Character

17 May 2026

This weekend saw our Intermediate and High Grade Belt testings take place, with students travelling in from all over Yorkshire to take part in what proved to be an intense and demanding experience. From York, Leeds and Barnsley to Huddersfield, Wath and Holmfirth, students came together with one shared goal — to test themselves and take the next step in their Martial Arts journey.

Gradings at this level are about far more than simply remembering techniques. As students progress through the syllabus, the standards become higher, the technical expectations increase and the mental demands grow alongside the physical ones. Over the course of the weekend, students were put through their paces both physically and mentally, being challenged on stamina, focus, discipline, technical ability and determination.

There were moments where students had to dig deep, push through fatigue and continue performing under pressure. That ability to keep going when things become difficult is one of the most important lessons Martial Arts teaches. It is not simply about how strong or fast someone is, but about resilience, attitude and the willingness to keep improving even when challenged.

One of the most rewarding parts of these gradings is seeing the hard work that has gone in behind the scenes over many months finally come to life on the grading floor. Countless hours of training, repetition and preparation were evident throughout the weekend, and every student who stepped forward should be proud of the courage it takes to put themselves in that position.

Gradings are never guaranteed, and not every student progresses at the same speed. However, every grading experience provides an opportunity to learn, develop and understand what is needed to move forward. Sometimes the biggest growth comes from being pushed outside of your comfort zone.

A huge well done to every student who attended this weekend’s Intermediate and High Grade Testing. The effort, commitment and determination shown throughout made the weekend something to be proud of. The journey continues, and the lessons learned over these past few days will no doubt help shape the next stage of everyone’s training. 👊
